The first documented excavation in Numantia went back 1803 and was subsidized by the Numantian Economic Society and Soria city hall. These first “archaeologic” works were realized by Juan Bautista Erro and Azpiroz and motivated by the debate that in his epoch took place about the primitive linguistic unity of Spain; its objective was to discover ruins with inscriptions that allow connecting the language of old Numantians with Basque.
